Kenyan Nyeri Embu Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We’ve got answers!

What makes Kenyan Nyeri coffee special?

Kenya's Nyeri and Embu counties sit on the volcanic slopes of Mount Kenya at 1,520-1,690 meters. Kochere sources from smallholder cooperatives growing the classic Kenyan varietals — SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11, and Batian — in volcanic soils. SL28 and SL34 were developed by Scott Laboratories in the 1930s specifically for Kenyan terroir and remain the genetic foundation of Kenya's world-class specialty reputation. The result is an intensely fruity, bright, clean cup unlike anything from other origins.

What does Kenya AB grade mean?

Kenya grades coffee by bean screen size. AB combines A-grade (screen 18) and B-grade (screen 17) beans for consistent density. Consistent sizing is important because it produces more even extraction in any brew method, leading to a more balanced cup. Kenya AB is a recognized specialty designation, not a secondary tier — AB lots regularly score 85+ on the SCA scale and are traded at premium prices.

How does Kenyan coffee differ from Ethiopian coffee?

Kenyan coffees are grown in red volcanic soils that produce a distinctive phosphoric or citric acidity — bright, clean, and intense. Ethiopian coffees, particularly natural-process varieties, tend toward floral, berry, and wine-like notes with softer acidity. Kenyan coffee is almost exclusively fully washed, emphasizing clarity and terroir. Ethiopian coffee is processed both naturally and washed, producing a wider flavor range. If you want precision and intensity, choose Kenyan. If you want wildness and complexity, choose Ethiopian.

How fresh is the coffee when it arrives?

Your beans are roasted within 1-2 days of your order and shipped immediately. Most US orders arrive within 3-5 business days, at peak freshness. Every bag includes the roast date.

What grind should I choose?

Whole bean for maximum freshness. For drip, select Drip Grind. For French press, choose Coarse. For espresso, select Fine. Kenyan Nyeri's bright acidity and fruit complexity are best showcased by pour-over methods — the clean extraction reveals the full citrus and berry character that makes Kenyan coffee exceptional.

How should I store my coffee?

Store in the resealable bag or an airtight, opaque container in a cool, dark place. Avoid the refrigerator. Whole beans stay fresh 4-6 weeks; ground is best within 1-2 weeks.

What if I don't like my coffee?

Kochere offers a Perfect Cup Guarantee. Contact us within 30 days for a full replacement or refund — no questions asked.
