Horn of Africa Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We’ve got answers!

What is the Horn of Africa Reserve?

The Horn of Africa Reserve is Kochere's signature espresso blend, combining Arabica beans from three East African origins — Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania. Each contributes a distinct quality: Ethiopian naturals bring berry depth, Kenyan washed beans add structured acidity and body, and Tanzanian coffee rounds the blend with floral brightness. The medium-dark roast is calibrated for espresso extraction — rich crema, full body, and complex flavor without single-note roast bitterness.

Can I use the Horn of Africa Reserve for drip or French press, not just espresso?

Yes. The medium-dark roast level works well across brew methods. In drip or French press, the dark chocolate and spice profile comes through with less intensity than espresso but with more body than lighter roasts. For pour-over, use a slightly coarser grind and water at 88-90 degrees Celsius to prevent over-extraction. The berry finish is actually more pronounced in filter brewing
than in espresso.

What makes an African espresso blend different from a Brazilian or Italian-style blend?

Most commercial espresso blends anchor on Brazilian or Indonesian beans for low acidity and forgiving extraction. Kochere's African blend introduces fruit depth, layered acidity, and floral complexity that traditional espresso blends lack. The tradeoff is a narrower extraction window — African espresso benefits from careful dialing-in — but rewards the effort with significantly more character in the cup. If you prefer bold and complex over smooth and mellow, this is your espresso.

How fresh is the coffee when it arrives?

Roasted within 1-2 days of your order and shipped immediately. For espresso, allow 3-7 days rest after roasting before pulling shots — freshly roasted beans release excess CO2 that can interfere with espresso extraction. Most US orders arrive perfectly timed for optimal espresso brewing.

What grind should I choose?

For espresso machines, select Fine. For Moka pot or AeroPress, Fine also works well. For drip brewing, select Drip Grind. For French press, choose Coarse. If you pull espresso at home, whole bean gives you the most control to dial in your shot with your specific equipment.

How should I store my coffee?

Store in the resealable bag or an airtight, opaque container in a cool, dark place. Avoid refrigeration. Whole beans stay fresh 4-6 weeks; ground is best within 1-2 weeks. Espresso-dedicated beans benefit from consistent storage temperature for shot consistency.

What if I do not like my coffee?

Kochere offers a Perfect Cup Guarantee. Contact us within 30 days for a full replacement or refund — no questions asked.
